| ●Brief description of project | The JR Kumamoto Building (AMU PLAZA) is the principal facility in the development of the area around the station. Located in the building are retail stores, restaurants, a cinema complex, wedding hall, hotel, and parking. Always bustling with people enjoying shopping or dining out together, as well as the employees there, the building is more like a small town. As a gateway to Kumamoto, the new commercial complex greatly enhances the appeal of the city. The vertical garden (Adventure Garden) in the building symbolizes the nature of Kumamoto. It has a vertical topography structured with trees and waterfalls located all through the building. It allows visitors to see nature right before them, the moment they arrive at the station. The large-scale indoor garden using a biophilic design philosophy has been realized through pioneering digital simulations and validation using mock-up models. The indoor garden portraying the authentic nature of Kumamoto creates an exceptional space, enabling the facility to stand out from other commercial complexes. With activities in the station building and the station square livening up the surrounding areas, the building also serves as a symbol of Kumamoto’s recovery after the great earthquake in 2016. |
